The guys are currently huge fans of Super Why, a cute little reading skills/literature comprehension show on PBS. We have about a dozen episodes all ready to go on the TiVo, and they've pretty much memorized all the lines from each show. Today, I was watching with Jonah as he shouted out answers. At one point, Super Wyatt asks YOU, the super reader, for YOUR name. And what did Jonah shout when asked his name? "NATE!!" Poor, poor Jonah. He certainly knows his name; he just thinks, based on watching the show with his brother, that the correct answer to "what's your name" is "Nate."
But it's not all copying Nate for Jonah. He has recently decided that Hand 1 and Hand 2 are his two favorite playthings. While Nate was at school on Friday, Jonah and I had pizza at CPK. While sitting in the booth, he stuck his hand out of the little slot in the booth's back. "Jonah," I asked, "what's your hand doing up there?" "It's looking out the window!" he chirped. "Well, tell your hand to come back and have some lunch," I said. Jonah pulled his hand back in, set it upon his pizza, and yelled, "Num num num num num!" Later he had some elaborate game going on, where his left hand was being shy, and his right hand was encouraging it to come out and play, and then one was crying, and the other was saying, "Hey, don't cry." It might be a little hard to explain, but it was very funny.
Nate had himself a great weekend full of big kid adventures. On Friday, we went over to Hannah's house for Shabbat, and Nate was thrilled to find out that five year old girls tend to sit down and play board games nicely (as opposed to other four year old boys, who generally like to run around and bang things, which Nate is not as fond of). We played Clue Junior (you may be surprised to learn that in Clue Jr., it's not so much who Colonel Mustard offs with the lead pipe, but rather who ate the cookie, where they ate it, and what they drank to wash it down), and I think he was mighty pleased to take turns, share the die, and move around the board in an orderly fashion, noting the clues. Which is not to say that everyone didn't also have a blast playing Jump On The Couch and Climb Hannah's Bunkbed And Touch The Ceiling. But it was a mature playdate.
Today we were off to the science center with Julia, Nate's current crush, and that was also a blast. Nate and Julia had a great time exploring the museum together and playing at Julia's house beforehand. Then in the afternoon, he cracked open his new Monopoly Junior set, in which you acquire amusement park rides and charge everyone else for tickets, and settled in for a nearly two hour game with Daddy. Nate, who has just discovered the concept of winning and losing, was excited to announce that he had won...which, Daddy pointed out, was true if you perceived winning as "being the first to get rid of all your money."
Also this weekend: Nate started multiplication. He's through the twos, and he's very, very excited about it. Also: who knew that multiplication is just adding the number by the set number of times? Not me, or at least, not until I found myself having to explain the concept to someone else. I'm pretty sure we never learned it that way in school, but it really makes a lot more sense when you think about it that way.
No exciting pictures lately, but here are some shots from dinner. Pardon the seefood:
